San Diego Beaches: Fun, West Coast Style
San Diego beaches aren’t just beautiful; they define a way of life. Located on the beautiful Pacific coast, San Diego’s beaches offer everything from sailing and surfing to biking and diving. The Travel Channel, in its top ten surveys crowned Coronado Municipal Beach as one of the best beaches in the country. This is as it should be. From the picture perfect town of Coronado, with its old style mansions on the water front to the wide sandy beaches, everything is in place. The beach is well patrolled by life guards, which makes the beach incredibly family friendly and there is plenty to do in town, when you are tired of playing in the sun, but really, how is that going to happen?
Mission Bay Park offers something for everyone, from theme parks like Fiesta Island and Sea World to scuba diving at Quivera Basin. Each little bit of the park really does leave its own mark on someone’s heart. Oceanside City Beach, near Camp Pendleton Marine Base offers surfing, swimming and the fun of a boardwalk without all the hassles of a carnival, not to mention the eye candy of Marines on leave. The best surfing is found at Oceanside Harbor, commonly referred to as the Jetties. The good news is that while the parking fills up before dawn with surfers, it’s emptied by noon. If you want to fish, you can try your luck off the end of the jetty or give surf fishing a try by the San Luis Rey River, on the south side of the river’s mouth. Everyone knows Mission Beach, one of the most popular San Diego Beaches. It has been described as where the carnival went and stayed. It is the funkiest, most eclectic beach in all of San Diego, catering to the most exotic tastes, where you will find middle aged business men out running, hawkers selling t-shirts and bikinis, and families having picnics in the grass. It really is a can’t miss if you are going to be in San Diego, as you will find very few places with as much personality as this one.
Even the dogs are welcomed to the beach. At the popular Dog Beach, located at Ocean Beach, this off leash beach is somewhere that your four footed friend can run wild with his “buds” and frolic in the sand and water to his heart’s content. At any one time you may find up wards of a hundred types of pets at this beach running amok. One word to the wise, however… watch your step!
If you are planning to enjoy San Diego beaches in a future vacation, it is important to know that, as of January 2008, in order to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, you now have to step off the beach and into one of the local bars or restaurants along the side the beach, since there is no longer alcohol allowed on the beach. So if you’re thinking of a few days of crazy partying with your buddies while drinking beer on the beach you will have to choose another destination!
