The Outer Banks - Beautiful Seclusion

Tip: Check out this site. www.outerbanks.org

The Outer Banks are a chain of islands stretching more than 100 miles along the eastern North Carolina coast. Roanoke, Colington, Bodie, Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands offer a look into the way life used to be. With few physical links to the mainland, time takes on a different meaning.

Locals are proud to have escaped the mainland life and tourists chose this secluded spot as choice that not everyone wants to make.

You’ll find remote beaches and luxurious rentals. You’ll discover sandy dunes and an abundance of spots for all kinds of water sports. Rent a kayak, canoe, Jet Ski or windsurfing equipment or relax at a soundside table and just watch.

Watersports and Beaches

There are many public beaches here. Click Here for a complete list.

Many people swear that the Outer Bank’s surf is the best on the East Coast. The water is warmer than in New England and the waves are more consistent than most places in Florida.

In the 1970’s the East Coast Surfing Championships started here and they are still an annual event. Several times the U.S. Championships were also held on the Outer Banks.

There are many places to rent boards and to arrange for lessons. The following are just a few.

Corolla Surf Shop

Secret Spot Surf Shop

The Pit Surf Shop

Ride the Wind Surf Shop

A tip for a great place to visit is Pamlico Sound. The is the largest lagoon along the East Coast. It stretches for 80 miles and is up to 30 miles wide. If you're a windsurfer or enjoy watching the surfers head to Canadian Hole. The sound is protected from the heavier Atlantic surf by barrier islands and conditions are calmer with steady winds, shallow thigh-deep water, and glassy water. Pamlico Sound is ideal for family swimming and kayaking.

Kite Flying

The wide open spaces and consistent wind makes the Outer Banks a great place for kite flying. Go to Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head for acres and acres of unobstructed air.

Kitty Hawk Kites is the largest kite store in the area. In addition to a great selection of kite you can get all sorts of other gear at Kitty Hawk. Whether you need gear, lessons or assistance for Kiteboarding, Hang gliding, Kayaking, Surfing or you want to arrange a tour of the area, you need to stop by Kitty Hawk Kites.
