Gunnison Beach: Clothing Optional in New Jersey
Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook NJ is somewhat unique in that it's affiliated with the AANR (Association for Nude Recreation). Clothing optional beaches are often a great tourist attraction, and this one sees over 5,000 people from all over the world every week during peak season.
One should note, however that it's not simply the option for nude sunbathing that brings people here. Another thing that sets this beach apart is the overall sense of community that exists here. There are people who come to the beach on a regular basis, and some of them have actually created a club that's purposes is creating a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable. That means it has a full contingent of lifeguards and excellent facilities that include a little “snack shak” where you can get a beverage or something to eat. In 1972 the base got decommissioned, and eventually became the largest East Coast clothing optional beach known today. Also, on a seasonal basis, part of the beach is used a reserved breeding ground for the Piping Plover, and endangered native bird. Getting There You can get to Gunnison through a variety of ways. There are Ferry boats from NYC, shuttle buses for tourists who want to take in other sites, regular city buses, and of course driving. What’s Nearby If you’re coming from out of town, no worries! There are several hotels within fifteen minutes of Gunnison beach that aren’t going to break the bank. Additionally there are numerous little restaurants, many featuring seafood if you’re hungry. When traveling in the summer months, you’ll also frequently discover live entertainment dotted along the beach front.
