Gunnison Beach: Clothing Optional in New Jersey

Gunnison BeachGunnison Beach in Sandy Hook NJ is somewhat unique in that it's affiliated with the AANR (Association for Nude Recreation). Clothing optional beaches are often a great tourist attraction, and this one sees over 5,000 people from all over the world every week during peak season.

One should note, however that it's not simply the option for nude sunbathing that brings people here. Another thing that sets this beach apart is the overall sense of community that exists here. There are people who come to the beach on a regular basis, and some of them have actually created a club that's purposes is creating a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable.

Gateway National Recreation Area

Gunnison Beach is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. That means it has a full contingent of lifeguards and excellent facilities that include a little “snack shak” where you can get a beverage or something to eat.

Clothing Optional 101

Nude sunbathing is not a free-for-all, nor is it an opportunity to gawk. In fact, clothing optional beaches often post "beach etiquette" on their websites so that people know what to expect and how to be have. This beach is no exception. Additionally, the word “optional” means just that. You can go and sun yourself in shorts or a bikini, or even a tuxedo for that matter and no one will hassle you. Your level of comfort – your choices! Some folks just like the nude bathing so there’s no discernible tan lines!

The location of this beach is such that you can see New York City on the horizon. This also means that the beach can fill up pretty quickly. If you want a good parking spot and your pick of sandy locations, get there early! From Memorial Day to Labor Day you'll pay 10 dollars to park, otherwise it's free.

Historical Sidebar

Gunnison beach was originally known as Gunnison Battery because it was an ideal location to build a protective facility for New York's Harbor (Fort Hancock). If you visit, you'll see gun placements that peer over the beach. You can also enjoy the view of Sandy Hook Lighthouse nearby.

In 1972 the base got decommissioned, and eventually became the largest East Coast clothing optional beach known today.

Other activities

Besides beach combing, Gunnison offers volleyball games on a regular basis. Also, on a seasonal basis, part of the beach is used a reserved breeding ground for the Piping Plover, and endangered native bird.

Getting There

You can get to Gunnison through a variety of ways. There are Ferry boats from NYC, shuttle buses for tourists who want to take in other sites, regular city buses, and of course driving.

What’s Nearby

If you’re coming from out of town, no worries! There are several hotels within fifteen minutes of Gunnison beach that aren’t going to break the bank. Additionally there are numerous little restaurants, many featuring seafood if you’re hungry. When traveling in the summer months, you’ll also frequently discover live entertainment dotted along the beach front.
