All About Beach Wheelchairs in California

The California Coastal Commission offers the use of Beach Wheelchairs at approximately 90 beaches throughout the state. These wheelchairs are free of charge and in some instances can be reserved ahead of time.

These wheelchairs are able to roll across the beach without sinking due to their large, wide wheels. A few of the locations offer motorized chairs but most of the chairs do require that someone accompanies the user to push the chair.

If you are interested in learning more about purchasing your own wheelchair, check out the following links. Most of the models are similar to regular wheelchairs but with the large wheels.

The Tiralo model is very interesting and is more similar to a chaise lounge on wheels. It even has attachable floats so a user can go out into the water. The website lists a small number of beaches where this model can be rented or is available for free use.
